High Quality Sanitation for Everyone Everywhere

Need for high quality shared sanitation in India
SHRI believes that everyone should have access to high-quality sanitation services wherever they live, work, and go to school. Unfortunately, over 23.8 crores people are forced to defecate in the open because they lack access to a household toilet. Further, adequate sanitation is not available for millions of children (0-6 years) at anganwadi centers, children (6-14 years) at schools and men/women at health facilities in India.
SHRI is committed to providing a preferential sanitation option for India’s poorest and most marginalized communities. We work towards this goal by partnering with government and other stakeholders to improve the access to high-quality community and institutional sanitation facilities for these communities. We believe that this approach will allow us to more quickly scale high-quality sanitation services to the crores of women, children, and men in India who currently lack quality sanitation services in community and institutional facilities. Finally, central to this approach are the people we hire who come from the communities we serve. We firmly believe that the women and men from the communities we serve are best equipped to do this work. Strengthening local capacities by developing a workforce trained to address India’s ongoing sanitation challenges is central to our approach.
